Dr. John Buse

Dr. John Buse is currently a professor at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill, North Carolina where he serves as the Director of the Diabetes Care Center, Chief of the Division of Endocrinology and Executive Associate Dean for Clinical Research. His research interests focus on developing prevention and treatment strategies for type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes and their complications. He has authored more than 100 publications and is involved in numerous multicenter clinical trials, most prominently ACCORD study for which he serves as Study Vice-Chair and STOPP-T2D study. He serves on the Data Safety Monitoring Board or Steering Committee for NIH and international studies such as NAVIGATOR, ORIGIN, IRIS, FREEDOM and NASH CRN. Dr. Buse is active in a number of national teaching efforts focusing on graduate medical education as well as CME including programs.
Dr Buse is also President for Medicine and Science at the American Diabetes Association and a board member of the Carolinas Affiliate of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists.

CURRENT RESEARCH INTERESTS
Genetic abnormalities in lipoprotein metabolism. Specific interest in: (1) the pathophysiological and molecular defects in familial combined hyperlipidemia; (2) the role of hepatic lipase gene and activity in determination of dyslipidemia seen in the metabolic syndrome with intraabdominal obesity and insulin resistance in diabetes and at menopause.

CVI Research Description:
I am currently the Medical Director of the Diabetes Center for Children at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. I have research interests in type 1 and type 2 diabetes and their relationship to premature cardiovascular disease.
ITMAT:
Dr. Willi is interested in therapeutics for type 1 and type 2 diabetes and has performed a number of physiologic studies in the etiology and characterization of diabetes in children.
Current studies include three trials on the delay of progression of type 1 diabetes and a multicenter trial to examine the optimal therapeutics for type 2 diabetes in children.
