International Diabetes: It has been shown that chronic oxidative stress is an important mechanism whereby glucose excess can damage beta-cells in type 2 diabetes patients. What do you think are the clinical implications of this mechanism for the treatment of diabetic patients?
Dr Robertson: I think the clinical implications are that, as patients develop type 2 diabetes and are chronically hyperglycemic throughout the day for many months and years, that they are truly undergoing oxidative stress throughout the entire body. So it makes sense to me to think about adding an ancillary line of therapy using antioxidants to help cover that stress that they are getting from excessive levels of reactive oxygen species.
