<International Diabetes>: Good afternoon Dr. Peters. In addition to its effect on bone metabolism, Vitamin D has various important physiological effects including a role in glucose homoeostasis, insulin release and response. As to your research please could you briefly describe the effect of Vitamin D on the pathogenesis of diabetes?

Prof. Pittas: OK, there is data from animal studies and observational human studies that strongly suggest a role for Vitamin D in the pathogenesis of diabetes, but there is much less evidence from randomized trials. In terms of basic signs from animal studies, there is fairly good evidence the Vitamin D has a role in promoting beta cell health as well as improving insulin sensitivity. In terms of observational human studies, there is very good cross-sectional data showing that people with diabetes have a low level of Vitamin D, however these data do not imply causality and at the same time there are prospective observational studies that have associated low Vitamin D status with the development of type 2 diabetes, so overall the observational evidence and the animal studies are relatively robust at this point, however we do not have any randomized trials that have been specifically designed to identify a causal link.
